So just to cap off a steady stream of cat posts, here are a couple Olive sketches.

Cats cats cats

Last week was the Cat Painting Takedown which, unsurprisingly, it was a lot of fun!

Thanks to the New York Daily News, the attendance was pretty incredible this time, and we were able to raise over $3,000 for BARC!

Bee Bee

Here's a little guy I made for a friend's baby shower. (Now the hilarious title makes more sense, huh?)
I have been thinking about bees a lot recently.  If you have also been, consider buying a tote or something!

Re-Sendaked!

Created this piece a few months back for SLJ's Re-Sendakify Sendak Project and am excited it is finally up!

Maurice Sendak and Kevin Henkes were (and are) two of my favorites so I had a lovely time combining them for the 50th anniversary of Where the Wild Things Are.
Hope you like it too!

Black Velvet

I recently participated in the Velvet Painting Takedown.  I had a couple hours to complete a velvet painting, which was auctioned off to benefit Art Start.

Naturally I painted a guinea pig king:

Happy Birthday Ron

Here is a card I made for a friend to give a friend. Incidentally, no one makes cards for me. It's okay though because I had fun doing it!

Creepy bird

Nothing so earth-shattering, but here is this bird:

Not to put too much weight on this little guy, but it got me thinking about a question that comes up a lot for people in the writing and illustrating biz, "What comes first, the words of images?" For me I usually think about both at kind of the same time.  Often it's one image that prompts some words that prompt more images, etc.

I like to get get my brain going by drawing an image, then describing it.  Sometimes it stays in the sketchbook, other times it becomes an entire book or iPhone case

Excuse the shameless plug and have a good holiday!

Belated Birthdays

I can't be sure but I feel like I've put up things about belated birthday greetings before.  Probably because it's not the least common occurrence.

Better late than never!

Recovered Classic

I've teamed up with the Creative Action Network on their new project, Recovering the Classics.

I chose to do Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness because I distinctly remembered the prevailing gloom.  Most covers default to an image of men on a ship or an old photograph of a steamer crew with "natives."

I wanted to pull more from the imagery Conrad uses, as he frequently references clouds and, of course, darkness.  The cover is intended to evoke the literal trail of smoke a steamer would generate, as well as a yellow sky before a bad storm, and, more generally, the presiding theme of light versus dark.

Check out the rest of the covers and maybe even consider buying mine one!

Ink Walrus

I recently discovered I love ink, and you may already know my feelings toward walruses (walri?)

Naturally.

My Special Tea

I'm not particularly proud of this one, but the phrase got stuck in my head while steeping some tea imported all the way from a Los Angeles hotel.  Hoarding complimentary tea bags may well be my specialty.

If you feel like you may want to look at this more then please consider buying it!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Every year I like to make Valentines for my friends. Every year I give them away before documenting until this year.  Here are a few!

This is a hippo that's on his way to a school in Connecticut.

Bon voyage, buddy!

The Gun Show Horse

Here is a poster I made for the Creative Action Network's project, The Gun Show.  Proceeds will go towards the contributing artists (like me!) and future projects.

I have nothing but love for the Horse-Man but it would be terrifying if he was jogging through Hurricane Sandy with a AR-15.

Fall Sketchbook 2012

If you enjoy a treasure hunt without treasure, then may I suggest looking through my sketchbook?
